Meditation - 2 workshops @ Het Puntje - 10 & 17 September 2021

The Yoga Sutra's describe a path from the external to the innermost state.
In this series we highlight three of the eight steps:
1) pranayama - breathing;
2) dharana - attention & concentration;
3) dhyana - meditation.

The first evening, on the 10th of September, opens with an intro on the Yoga Sutra's of Patanjali, an ancient teaching on the eight folded path of yoga and the different states of mind and consciousness along the way.

Since breathing and mind are directly related we begin here, exploring a breathing technique that purifies the nervous-system and allows us to connect with a more subtle state of being, our inner-body if you will.

On the 17th we'll dive into attention, how to shift it and how to move towards effortless concentration, preparing us for the next step.
This is where we bring everything together and move towards a state of meditation.

The evenings begin with the knowledge from the Yoga Sutra's, followed by a guided practice, ending with Q&A. Would love to see you there!

Hormoon & Yin Yoga Workshop - vrijdag 14 juni 2019 - 19:00 tot 21:00 uur


In deze speciale workshop leer je hoe yoga het hormoon evenwicht kan herstellen. Of je nu sterke hormoonschommelingen ervaart of niet, deze workshop is voor iedereen. Met zachte poses die zorgen voor een betere doorbloeding van hypofyse, schildklier en bijnieren, en meer ruimte in het bekken. En vaak volgt een diepe nachtrust na de practice.

In Yoga Nidra we learn how to relax consciously by shifting our awareness through different parts of the body in a very specific order.

This is followed by a guided meditation while being in a most comfortable resting position like shavasana. Supported by bolsters and blankets. Bringing anything that makes you feel at home, warm and comfortable.

Many things happen though this practice, one is the voice of our intuition becomes stronger, we start to trust and relax into ourselves AND OUR LIFE PATH.

YOGA SUTRA & MEDITATION - SUNDAY 1 JULY 2018 -  12:00-13:30

In the morning we begin with a Vinyasa Yoga class from 9:30 to 11:00 for which you can register in advance as well.

Then there's an hour break. I can recommend the tea and home made cake's next to the freshly made salads or healthy breakfasts at Het Puntje where our training is.

At 12:00 we begin with a study of a few specific sutra's/teachings related to our theme: how to come to a state of meditation, or how to deepen our meditation practice.

The Yoga Sutra's of Patanjali describe 8-limbs of the Yoga path. These 8 aspects provide us with a clearer understanding of our daily lives, by defining the nature of our mind. 

E.g. YS 1.2 Yoga is the stilling of the fluctuations of the mind. YS 1.3 When that is established the seer abides in its own true nature. Etc.

It explains how the dynamics of aversion and attachment are the cause of most of our suffering. And comes with tools/guidance for challenging situations like how to deal with negative thoughts or with people who can potentially "destroy" our state of bliss, like YS 1.33 (...) by cultivating a state of equanimity towards them (...). 

Step by step, by applying these teachings our minds become more still, our perception more subtle, while our awareness and understanding deepens. In other words, the quality of our life improves and we actually get to enjoy life more!

With hands on adjustments and plenty of space to ask all your questions, like things that haven't been quite clear in class, or what you individually can do to work on something specific.

The workshop is interactive, with some hard work (each according to their needs and capacity), and a possibility of physical and emotional release of some of the obstacles present in this moment.

We finish with alternate nostril breathing and a short guided meditation.

Pranayama Exploration - with Isabel & Joyce

Our lungs allow us to live, feel energetic, spacious, free and open. Breathing is an essential part of our yoga practice, on and off the mat. How can we breathe even more effectively? What kind of practice can support a longer and deeper breath? How do we connect the breath to our yoga practice?

All of those questions are part of our common exploration of pranayama, its benefits and practices. The session will be a summary of a training that Isabel attended with Sudhir Tiwari, a traditional pranayama master. We will try and share his invaluable teachings to give you a glimpse of how pranayama can become a part of your daily life. The idea is to explore various practices together and to understand the deep foundation of pranayama.

We will practice Ujjayi and Alternate Nostril Breathing together, and explain the positive effects on our nervous system. Having a positive and calming effect they help with digestive issues, stress, anxiety, problems with sleep, health, etc.

Moon Sequence Evening Classes - 19 May & 9 June 2017

Two guided gentle Moon Sequence evening classes coming up on

Friday 19 May 2017 and Friday 9 June 2017 between 19:00 and 20:30.

These classes will be open to anyone and everyone interested in a gentle yoga practice with movement and breath on a Friday night.

No prior knowledge is required and there will be plenty of time to adapt postures to your own physical needs!

We will spend around 60 minutes doing yoga postures, 15 minutes relaxation and another 15 minutes for tea, cookies and lovely conversation.

The idea is to practice various aspects of the moon sequence as taught by Matthew Sweeney, but we will also be a little creative and adapt the sequence where needed, not going through all postures. We will be on the look for breath, softness and inward attention.

Introduction in Vedic Meditation

Deze intro wordt twee keer gegeven, zondag 12 maart van 10:00-11:30 uur en vrijdag 24 maart van 19:00-20:30 uur.

Tijdens deze 1e sessie beginnen we met 15 minuten gentle yoga om met meer gemak 'ease' in het lichaam aanwezig te zijn. Gevolgd door een opname van de intro-talk van Thom Knoles. Tijdens het luisteren naar deze opname kan het zomaar zijn dat je al een shift in bewustzijn ervaart. Daarna oefenen we een korte meditatie (zonder mantra), en is er ruimte voor vragen.

Deze 1e sessie is 20 euro, en kan ook gevolgd worden zonder dat je aan de 2e mee wilt doen :)

Meditation Instruction

Ook deze sessie wordt twee keer gegeven, zondag 2 april van 10:00-11:30 uur en vrijdag 7 april van 19:00-20:30 uur.

We starten met 15 minuten yoga. Gevolgd door een instructie hoe te zitten met of zonder mantra, kortom hoe te mediteren. Deze instructie is key voor een succesvolle ervaring die je uitnodigt om dagelijks terug te keren naar je meditatie. Met toelichting op de fysiologische aspecten en mogelijk positieve effecten in ons leven.

Omdat ik -nog- geen gekwalificeerd Vedic Meditation teacher ben kan ik je geen persoonlijk mantra aanreiken. Tijdens deze 2e sessie ontvang je wel een aantal opties om mee te werken, afkomstig uit de Veda's waarop deze traditie is gebaseerd. Om een persoonlijk mantra te ontvangen kun je je aanmelden bij bijv Thom Knoles, en andere leraren in deze traditie of in TM (transcendentale meditatie). Twee verschillende namen en organisaties werkend met dezelfde techniek.

De instructie die je ontvangt is key voor iedere vorm van meditatie beoefening. Voor mij persoonlijk een verademing om te begrijpen waarom ik het voorheen zo lastig vond om te mediteren.

Deze 2e sessie is 25 euro, en kan alleen gevolgd worden als je ook de 1e mee hebt gedaan.

The Moon Sequence by Isabel Düsterhöft (as taught by Matthew Sweeney)

The Moon Sequence (Chandra Krama) is intended for practice on the moon days or on days when you have less energy than usual. It is a gentle and restorative vinyasa system, yet strengthening and flowing. It increases awareness of your outer and inner body, can be modified around many injuries, menstruation and pregnancy, and is accessible for any age and ability.

12 February - Full Standard Moon Sequence
19 March - New Moon Sequence & Metta Bhavana Meditation

Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga - Mysore Workshop - Part 2

How to sequence your own practice 

On this morning we're gonna practice Surya Namaskar A & B, standing postures (and the finishing sequence). Depending on your pace, this practice can take you e.g. 20 minutes or an hour. 

You'll be guided to move with the correct counting, breathing, and dristi. Following the Tristhana method, meaning there are three places of attention, which assist in strenthening the body, purifying the nervous system and stabilsing the mind. For more info: http://kpjayi.org/the-practice

In the Ashtanga practice it's not (just) performing the asana that counts. It's a breathing and movement system designed to work much deeper than the physical aspect of your being. It's knowing the correct counting, breathing and dristi that can make this practice into a life-changing experience.

On Sunday morning we're gonna practice Surya Namaskar A & B with jumping forward & back. Then the steps into full headstand, finishing with shavasana.

Yin Yoga, Breathing & Meditation 

On Friday the 23rd of January you are welcome to join an evening of yin yoga postures, followed by a sitting breathing practice. The video shows a way to meditate, and describes some of the positive effects of meditation. We end the evening with a meditation pratice. What we do can be used as a self-practice for you at home.

YIN YOGA EVENING – FRIDAY 7TH OF NOVEMBER

The time of autumn is a time to connect with what lives inside of us, and like the leaves of the trees to be okay with letting go. The session for this evening is designed to assist with these processes, and with our ability to breathe freely.

Autumn is connected with the Metal element which relates to the Lungs and the Large Intestine. With our lungs we breathe in the vital air, and the large intestine eliminates the waste that our bodies no longer need.

The metal element, lungs and autumn are all related to transformation, and to the ability to encounter change or difficulty with confidence.

The course is for all who'd like to deepen their practice and their understanding of yoga.  

The study part is based on the following material that you can order through the studio:

The provisional dates are:

Schedule:

  • Friday's 19:00 - 21:00 Yin Yoga;
  • Sunday's 10:00 - 12:30 Vinyasa Yoga.   

The dates are open for change if needed, with the option to cover any missed sessions at the end of each month.

VIJAY GOPALA - Friday 13th of June

Vijay Gopala, an inspiring yoga teacher from Mysore, India, is coming back to Pilar Studio in June.

On Friday evening Vijay is teaching asana, breathing and yoga philosophy.

How? By practicing the Sun Salutations, Yogic Breathing and sharing the wisdom of the Yoga Sutra's according to the hatha yoga tradition.

When Vijay visited us for the first time -six months ago- the students were pleasantly surprised by the different approach to the asana's (postures). It gives you a chance to experience effortless stability. In this way posture practice is a meditative practice too. Combining asana, pranayama, pratyahara, dharana into the meditative state of dhyana.

Vijay is also one of the international guest teachers at the yearly Yoga Festival Terschelling (27-29 June).

As humans we are able to store "stuff" on a physical, mental or emotional level resulting in contractions and stress. In the yin practice we allow all of this to be there. To be still on the inside. By not resisting we embrace and let go. Allowing us to feel more vast and spacious. Grounded in a light way.

This workshop will focus on hip and lower back flexibility, the liver, kidney, heart, lung and intestine meridians, and a deep letting go of resistance and tension.

YIN YOGA WORKSHOPS

Coming back from Rishikesh, India I look forward to share the yin yoga as taught to me by Louise Ellis. 

Both workshops will focus on hip flexibility, the liver, kidney and gallbladder meridians, and a deep letting go of resistance and tension. The yin practice works mostly on the deep connective tissues of the hips, pelvis and lower spine.

On Sunday there will be more forward bends, and on Friday the 13th of Dec more back bends. Both practices are also beneficial is case of digestion issues related to tension.

The setting for these days is a quiet, calm, comforting and warm environment. Feel free to bring anything that may enhance this feeling for you (e.g. a blanket, shawl, your favorite shirt...)

Yoga Workshop with Sri. Vijay Gopala


On this evening you get a chance to experience the warmth and wisdom of this traditional teacher. I asked Vijay to start with a small talk about 'what is yoga'. You'll be surprised how much 'yoga' you can experience just by listening to this man.

Then, he guides us through the Sun Salutations, and certain asana. If we're lucky, and there is time we go into meditation as well.

I cannot tell you enough how special it is to be able to share Vijay's teachings here in the studio. Surely hope to see many familiar faces :-)

Biography Sri. Vijay Gopala

Sri. Vijay Gopala has been teaching Yoga for more than 20 years. Besides this he provides life changing one to one counseling sessions and self-­‐ evolving programs.

Born in Mysore, India, from his childhood Vijay Gopala was drawn to the discipline of yoga thanks to his father who guided and taught him in a very this serene atmosphere. He studied from his early age in all the eight branches of yoga. He went to University in Bangalore and has two Master Degrees in Philosophy. He has knowledge of most religions and belief systems. And his specialization is Bhagavadgita and Greek philosophy. Vijay also has a post graduate diploma in development planning from the University of Mysore.

Vijay's life experiences have made his teachings rich in expertise required for any kind of transformation to take place. He shares the teaching of Yoga with a rare warmth, humanity and wisdom.

Over Viktor van der Kleij:

Een bijzonder yogi, goede vriend en ervaren teacher. Viktor leeft voornamelijk in Zuid-Afrika en Mozambique in de MIA ashram (Moving in Awareness). Een samenlevingsgemeenschap gericht op het leven in en met de natuur en haar voedingsbronnen. Hier begeleidt hij mensen naar een meer bewust en geïntegreerd leven. Viktor's kennis van en ervaring met de yoga traditie is zeldzaam in onze westerse wereld. Dat geldt tevens voor de ademhalingstechnieken waar we mee aan de slag gaan. De mogelijkheid om met zo iemand te werken komt niet dagelijks voorbij. Dat wil ik je graag nog even meegeven.
